How extreme chemical resistance and thermal stability drive the future of clean energy mobility.
The global automotive industry is undergoing a historic transition from traditional internal combustion engines (ICE) to electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid systems, and hydrogen fuel cell powertrains. With this revolution comes a dramatic shift in material requirements. Modern automotive sealing applications demand materials that can withstand aggressive new coolants, high voltages, chemical electrolytes, and extreme temperatures. Perfluoroelastomers (FFKM) have emerged as the absolute gold standard for critical sealing applications in this new landscape.
Chemically, FFKM represents the peak of elastomer technology. Composed of fully fluorinated carbon backbones, FFKM offers chemical resistance comparable to PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) while maintaining the elastomeric recovery and sealing properties of a true rubber. Historically reserved for aerospace and semiconductor manufacturing, the commercial volume of FFKM in the automotive sector has surged. This growth is driven by the need for zero-tolerance safety profiles in lithium-ion battery packs and high-efficiency thermal management loops.
While standard fluoroelastomers (FKM) perform adequately in traditional oil and fuel environments, they fail rapidly when exposed to the aggressive organic solvents, carbonated liquids, and highly alkaline battery electrolytes found in lithium-ion cells. FFKM’s fully fluorinated structure provides complete resistance to swelling, chemical degradation, and micro-cracking, ensuring battery systems remain hermetically sealed for their entire operational lifespan (often exceeding 10–15 years).
1. EV Battery Pack Sealing & Electrolyte Management: The electrolyte inside a lithium-ion battery is a complex chemical cocktail consisting of lithium salts (such as LiPF6) dissolved in organic carbonate solvents (such as dimethyl carbonate, diethyl carbonate, and ethylene carbonate). In the presence of trace moisture, these compounds can generate highly corrosive hydrofluoric acid (HF). FFKM sealing materials, particularly our BDFF series, are uniquely engineered to withstand prolonged direct contact with these solvents and acids without losing their structural integrity or sealing force, preventing catastrophic leaks and thermal runaway events.
2. Direct Immersion Cooling Systems: As EV charging rates increase and battery capacities grow, direct immersion cooling is replacing indirect glycol-water plates. Dielectric coolants (such as single-phase synthetic fluids or perfluoropolyethers like our Fluocon PFPE) require seals that do not leach contaminants or swell over time. FFKM seals maintain chemical compatibility with these advanced dielectric fluids, ensuring the cooling circuit remains leak-free and electrically isolated.
3. Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles (FCVs): Hydrogen fuel cells operate under highly humid, acidic, and high-temperature conditions. Standard elastomers degrade under the acidic environment of the proton exchange membrane (PEM). FFKM provides the chemical inertness and low gas permeability needed for hydrogen manifold seals, end-plate gaskets, and coolant line interfaces, preventing hydrogen gas bypass and system degradation.

Overview & Legacy: Chengdu Kingrande Chemicals Co., Ltd. (formerly Chenguang Fluoro & Silicone Elastomers Co., Ltd. / FSE) was founded in 2004. Headquartered in Chengdu with manufacturing sites in Suining, China, we have grown through over 20 years of unremitting efforts from a small team of ten into a comprehensive enterprise with 300+ staff and two subsidiaries. We have evolved from simple traditional techniques to becoming a leading domestic supplier powered by patented technology, expanding our expertise from FKM pre-compounds to the high-end fine chemical market.
Contact UsKingrande specializes in the R&D and production of specialty fluorinated chemicals and silicone materials. Our diverse portfolio includes:
Innovation in polymer architecture to meet the challenges of next-generation green transportation.
A classic limitation of traditional perfluoroelastomers (FFKM) has been their low-temperature performance, with glass transition temperatures (Tg) often hovering around -10°C to 0°C. In automotive applications, vehicles must operate reliably in freezing winter conditions (down to -40°C). Kingrande's R&D team has successfully synthesized specialized low-temperature monomers that introduce flexible ether linkages into the polymer backbone, lowering the Tg without sacrificing chemical or thermal resistance. This innovation ensures that EV battery seals and automotive fuel lines maintain elasticity and sealing force in sub-zero environments.
Global regulatory bodies, including REACH in Europe and the EPA in the United States, are tightening restrictions on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). In response, Kingrande has pioneered the use of **Borflon FSA**, an eco-friendly Y-Type perfluoro surfactant, as a substitute for PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) in our emulsion polymerization processes. This ensures our FFKM and FKM products comply with the highest global environmental standards, providing automotive OEMs with a sustainable, future-proof supply chain.
Thermal runaway is one of the most critical safety concerns in lithium-ion battery packs. During a thermal runaway event, temperatures can exceed 800°C, and highly toxic, corrosive gases are vented under pressure. Sealing materials must act as a barrier to prevent the spread of fire and hot gases to adjacent battery modules. Our ultra-heat-resistant FFKM BDFF Series is designed to maintain its structural integrity under extreme heat spikes, helping to isolate failing cells and provide vital time for vehicle occupants to evacuate safely.
Quality is the blood of our enterprise. Kingrande’s management system is certified by SGS with ISO9001:2015, IATF16949:2016, and ISO14001:2015. We are recognized by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology as a "Little Giant" of Specialized, Fine, Peculiar, and Innovative enterprises. Our accolades include being named a National High-tech Enterprise, a National Intellectual Property Advantage Enterprise, and a Top 100 Sichuan Enterprise in Technological Innovation.
